Homemade Hot Chocolate with Candy Cane Syrup

Add this homemade hot chocolate with candy cane syrup to your to-do list this winter season. It’s so delicious and it’s topped with homemade whip cream.
I am not sure about you, but I always end up with a lot of candy canes after the holidays. I buy them to decorate and to give out to the kids, but we never eat all of them.
This year we made a candy cane simple syrup for our interpretation of Buddy the Elf coffee. Then we quickly started experimenting by using this delicious syrup in other drinks.
This homemade hot chocolate was our first experiment. Here is a recipe for homemade hot chocolate, homemade candy cane syrup, and homemade whipped cream. Make them, mix them and top with mini marshmallows.
Home Made Hot Chocolate
This homemade hot chocolate is creamy and delicious. Serve as is or add candy cane syrup and homemade whipped cream, top with mini marshmallows and enjoy!
Ingredients
- 1 Cup Milk
- 2 Tbsp Hershey's Cocoa Powder
- 1 Pinch Salt
- 1 Tbsp Sugar
- 1 Tsp Vanilla Extract
- 3 Tbsp Candy Cane Syrup
- 3 Tbsp Whipped Cream Whipped Cream should not be stiff or in peaks. You want this to be gently whipped so it floats on top.
Instructions
- Add milk, cocoa powder, salt, vanilla extract, and sugar to a small pot and whisk under medium heat until blended smooth. Continue stirring as milk warms. Do not let the milk boil. Let it simmer gently for 3-5 minutes.
- When the hot chocolate is done, remove from the heat and pour into your mug and add 3 tablespoons of the candy cane syrup.
- Float whipped cream on top.
- Sprinkle top with mini marshmallows and serve!

Homemade Candy Cane Syrup
Not sure what to do with candy canes? Make them into a delicious simple syrup and then add them to your drinks!
Ingredients
- 1 Cup Candy Canes approximately 8-10 canes
- 1 Cup Water
Instructions
- Break candy canes into pieces and to pot with one cup of water.
- Bring water to a boil and stir regularly as candy canes dissolve into water. When fully dissolved, remove from heat and let cool.
- That's it! It's super easy. You can now add this syrup to your hot chocolate, coffee, or cocktails! It's the perfect addition to make your favorite drink feel like Christmas!

Homemade Whipped Cream
Making homemade whipped cream is super easy if you have an electric mixer! If you're doing it by hand, get ready to work! But, either way, a homemade whipped cream is way better than the stuff that comes out of a can.
Ingredients
- 1 Cup Heavy Whipping Cream
- 2 tbsp Powdered Sugar
Instructions
- Add Cream and Sugar to a large mixing bowl and whip to desired consistency. For use as a float on a drink, you don't want it to peak. If you're using it on pies or ice cream, whip until stiff peaks form.
