Ways to Reduce Plastic and Waste in the Kitchen

Over the past year, I made a point to reduce the plastic and waste from our kitchen. I thought I didn’t have much to change, but as I took inventory, I realized we had many toxic things and produced too much waste.
Below is a list of all my favorite products. The benefits of having an eco-friendly kitchen are that you can eliminate toxins, reduce waste, save money, and save trips to the store by changing a few products.

- Vacuum Glass Food Containers | Glass containers look better and also keep you and your family safe. If you don’t want to invest in the vacuum option, then get regular glass containers.
- Bamboo Paper Towels | This was one of my drastic changes. I bought two rolls of paper towels, and we love them. We have been using the same two rolls for months. I wash them in hot water and fold them in thirds so I can put them in the paper towel holder (see the picture above). If we clean something super greasy or they are too stained, then they go to the trash.
- Reusable Dish Sponges | I love this. I was spending too much money on eco-friendly sponges. These can be washed and sanitized in the washer machine.
- Reusable produce bags | Reusable produce bags are great. They reduce waste, but I feel like they speed the time up at the store. I spend too much time trying to open the plastic bags or finding them. Wash them often.
- Metal Straws | We have all sizes of metal straws. To start, I would suggest a variety pack and extra-large wide straws for water bottles.
- Plant-Based Trash Bags | I was worried these would disintegrate. I am happy to report that they are great! I tend to pack the trash can so that I can avoid being the one that takes it out to the curb. They hold so much weight, and you won’t notice the difference.
- Reusable Food Storage Bags | Using disposable bags is such a bad habit and hard to kick. To make the change, I hid all the plastic bags in the pantry and replaced them with these. To complete all of our needs, we got a set of mixed bags and gallon bags.
- Beeswax Reusable Food Wraps | Plastic wrap is hard to replace because it has so many uses for us around the kitchen. We use these wraps for fruits and veggies that we didn’t completely use. To wrap containers, we use silicone stretch lids.
- Reusable Grocery Shopping Box Bags | Having large grocery bags are a game-changer for me.
- Mason Jars | I use mason jars for everything! Food storage, organizing, and party decor. Mason jars so versatile, so I have a full drawer with different sizes. I prefer wide-mouth and smooth jars. Consider buying reusable lids for these.
We loved the changes we have made and hope you find this post helpful. If you know of more products that reduce waste, let me know in the comments below.
