Grain-Free, Pumpkin, and Apple Dog-Cake Recipe
Our dog’s birthday is in November, so I thought a cake with fall flavors would be best to celebrate his special day. This grain-free, pumpkin, and apple dog-cake recipe came out great.
The cake is very fluffy and delicious. How do I know? Well, of course I had to try it. Even my kids were wondering why it was for him and not them. LOL
Pumpkin Apple Cake Recipe
I tweaked my recipe many times to make sure all the ingredients were safe for him to eat and also adjusted the measurements to make sure I ended up with a small cake. If you want a bigger cake, then double the recipe and use 6-inch cake pans.
This grain-free, pumpkin, and apple dog-cake recipe makes two small 4-inch cake layers and it’s topped with pumpkin-flavored whipped cream and raspberries.
If you get different ingredients than the ones I am listing, then make sure you get quality ingredients and check each item in the nutritional label. Some ingredients that are safe for people to consume are extremely harmful to dogs.
Also, the whipped cream frosting is completely optional. You can use half of the amount listed in the recipe or use only berries on top.

Equipment
- 4 inch cake pans
- Mixing bowls
- Sifter
- Measuring cups and spoons
- Hand mixer

Ingredients
Pumpkin and Apple Cake
- 1 cup paleo baking flour sifted
- 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1/4 cup canola oil
- 1/4 cup honey
- 1/2 cup pumpkin puree
- 1/2 cup apple sauce unsweetened, no acid
- 1 egg room temperature
- 2 tbsp water
Pumpkin Frosting
- 1 cup whipped cream
- 1 tbsp pumpkin puree
Instructions
Pumpkin and Apple Cake
- Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. Use canola oil to coat two 4-inch cake pans.
- Sift the paleo baking flour and baking soda into a large mixing bowl.
- Add canola oil, honey, pumpkin puree, apple sauce, egg, and water into a separate mixing bowl. Use a hand mixer to combine.
- Mix the wet and dry ingredients. Use a silicone spatula to scrape the edges.
- Pour the mixture into the two prepared cake pans. Bake for 25-30 minutes on the middle rack. Remove once the top and edges are golden brown. The toothpick test will not work with this recipe.
Pumpkin Frosting
- Mix whipped cream and pumpkin puree.
- Once the cake is completely cool, add a small dollop in the middle, place the second layer and spoon the rest of the whipped cream on top of the cake.
Bone Cake Topper
Finish the look with a simple cake topper. For this cake, I used a medium-sized bone. The large bones are better for 6-inch cakes.

- Use a hot glue gun to adhere the paper bone into a skewer.
- Trim the skewer if it sticks out to far.
